As the first FabLab Fellow at the American Center Korea (ACK), US Embassy Seoul, I developed the ART-TECH, a STEAM workshop model applying maker and informal learning principles to creation on mobile devices. The objective is to empower people to use their devices for digital media creation, not only digital media consumption, in an introductory and accessible way. Many people already carry this technology everywhere, but underutilize its creative potential. Participants can also continue to apply skills learned outside of the workshop with their own devices.
ART-TECH programs are informal, experimental, and process-oriented workshops. Participants need no previous experience and all skill levels are welcome.
I have developed a five-part model for workshops integrating art and technology. Each workshop consists of a welcome, looking exercise, technology or software tutorial, making challenge, and concludes with participants sharing their work and reflecting on the process and the media.
ART-TECH workshops topics include mobile phone photography, digital music creation, 3D modeling, stop motion animation, and web portfolio design. Please visit the American Center Korea's blog and Flickr.
Workshops were held 2-5 times per week at ACK and at 22 community partner locations in Seoul and regional areas of South Korea. We held 47 ART-TECH programs for 878 participants between February and June 2016.
